Kodak launched the worlds first 50 MegaPixel CCD sensor for cameras. Well not for all camera’s but for professional level cameras which are generally used in studio settings. This is the highest resolution CCD for non-scientific imaging. Technical specifications are provided on the Kodak image sensor website. To give a perspective of the kind of resolution such a camera would afford, consider this: “With a 50 megapixel camera, in an aerial photo of a field 1.5 miles [about 2.5 km] across, you could detect an object about the size of a small notebook computer (1 foot by 1 foot).”

While this may be available for studio level cameras only at this time, Sony offers a 24 megapixel CCD in professional level handheld cameras. Wonder whats next!!
